What to visit ?
Mljet island
it is the largest island of the Dubrovnik area. This island has retained a large area of wilderness.
Forests cover almost 70% of the island. All west part of the island is the National Park Mljet. You will have access by boat on the island, the ideal is to drive to the Peljesac peninsula and take the ferry (2 hours crossing) to Trstenik. Or the ferry to Dubrovnik for Sobra.
Then you enter in the "green island" called like that because of its many forests that cover the whole island! There are 2 parts : west part : the national park, southern part : habitations. Small villages and houses have not damaged the coast, there are nice small ports, coves and beaches, small shops, you'll feel like me being in small villages inhabited by local so that there is still a lot of tourists, but curiously you don't see them !
The originality of this island is the entrance to sea by small channels and the formation of two lakes: the big Lake and the small lake . When you walk or drive on this island, then you will feel all the time to see the sea and the forest, in height. And on a lake (which is only a part of the Sea) you will see a yacht! Strange! So you will ride through the villages and arrive at the end of the island to the National Park.
From there, you will park your car, you will walk and you will take a boat to get to St. Mary Monastery. Located in the middle of a large lake, it was founded in the 12th century by Benedictine from Italy, then was built fortifications, outbuildings and a cloister. On site you will find a coffee shop. The vegetation is dominated by Aleppo pines, oaks, wildlife is varied: birds, reptiles, fish, mammals and mongooses !!
